There is no single schedule that suits every household. How often something needs washing depends on how it is used, whether it dries fully between uses and what its manufacturer recommends.
A practical starting schedule
- Bed sheets
- Roughly weekly to every two weeks, depending on use, sweating, pets and individual circumstances.
- Bath towels
- Roughly every three to five normal uses when the towel is hung up and dries fully. Wash sooner if it remains damp or becomes soiled.
- Pillowcases
- Roughly weekly. Pillowcases collect oils, sweat and hair or skincare products, so regular washing helps keep them fresh.
- Gym clothes
- Generally after a sweaty use, subject to the garment instructions. Let damp activewear air out rather than leaving it closed in a bag.
- Bath mats
- Wash regularly and sooner when the mat stays damp, develops an odour or becomes visibly soiled.
- Doonas and comforters
- Every few months can be a useful broad guide where appropriate, but the filling, cover use and manufacturer instructions should decide the method and frequency.
What should change the schedule?
- Heavy use or sweating: move the wash forward rather than waiting for a calendar date.
- Pets: bedding and soft furnishings may need attention more often.
- Damp conditions: towels, bath mats and activewear need to dry fully between uses.
- Visible dirt or spills: treat the item promptly using care-label-safe guidance.
- Bulky construction: check that the item and its filling can be machine washed and dried as labelled.
Make the routine easier to repeat
Group items by compatible colours, care instructions and soil level rather than putting every household textile into one load. Avoid overloading the machine, and allow enough drying time for thick towels and bedding before storing or using them again.
